What is a noise-cancelling feature in an earbud, and how does it help to have a great audio experience?

Active noise cancellation is not a new technology, but surprisingly enough, not many people are aware of how this popular innovation works. As several earphones are getting launched with this feature, their prices have also dipped. Let's try to explore what "noise-cancelling feature" means and how you can decide if it's to your liking. The noise-cancelling feature basically means that the earbuds will mute all the noise around it. Though it is practically impossible to reduce the noise to zero, most decent earphones can cut down a significant part of background noise. With most elements of ambient sound done away with, things are quiet enough for you to get engrossed in your favourite music.
How did it first come to be?

The technology was first devised in the 1950s, based on patents by Lawrence Fogel. In fact, to date, he is hailed as the inventor of this feature. It was initially invented for the aviation industry, as this technology helped in making aeroplanes and helicopters quieter for pilots. Eventually, it also made its way into some high-end cars, to make the cabin quieter. However, it is the consumer-centric headphones where this feature finds its widest application. The mechanism is such that, it does not curtail noise simply by trying to block it, but rather listens to the sound with the help of microphones. Thereafter, it produces a sound wave of its own that cancels out the existing sound effectively.

How does the technology work?

When it comes to earbuds, the noise cancellation feature uses one or more microphones to decipher the environment of the wearer. Then, it captures the steadiest sound frequency, be it the hum of an airplane engine, car, AC, and so on. It then generates a "reverse" frequency, which means, it emits a sound of the same amplitude but with an inverted phase. When combined with the first sound, a new wave called interference" is formed, which manages to cancel out the sound going into your ears. Consequently, the primary 'noise' is minimized, and if your earbuds are equipped with good active noise cancellation, the sound is almost nil. This technology is most effective in the case of steady sounds since the microphones can pick up and reverse these frequencies. It is interesting to note that this technology does not work as effectively with irregular sounds such as voices, honking etc. This is what differentiates noise cancellation from sound-proofing; the former simply brings down the noise in certain environments.

The all-new OPPO Enco X

If you are on the lookout for a brilliant set of earphones that scores high on the noise cancelling feature, the latest launch from OPPO, the Enco X, is the best choice for you! Launched on the 18th of January, this premium earphone was unveiled in India along with the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G. Joining the Enco family that comprises the Enco W51, W31, W11, and Enco Free, this next-gen audio product is equipped with two modes for its noise cancellation feature: max noise cancellation and noise cancellation. You can also use the other modes: transparency and noise cancellation off. The OPPO Enco X comes with a dual microphone design to offer ANC (Active Noise Control). Priced at Rs. 9,990, the OPPO Enco X sports an in-ear style design accompanied by a stem. This flagship product from OPPO is complemented by the brand's DBEE 3.0 Sound System and LHDC (Low Latency and High-Definition audio Codec) wireless transmission. The DBEE 3.0 ensures distinct and detailed sound levels. Co-created by Danish HiFi brand, Dynaudio, the OPPO Enco X promises a dual-driver setup and is also one of the first adopters of Bluetooth 5.2. Besides, it supports SBC, AAC, and LHDC codes, the last one being quite a niche.

Dynaudio ties up with OPPO to create a marvel piece of earbuds

Being a gadget geek myself, I mostly loathe the idea of buying cheap, low-quality earphones and then complaining about how fragile they are. Much to my delight (and I’m sure most music enthusiasts will share my feelings!), OPPO has just launched a marvellous set of earbuds! Yes, I’m talking about the OPPO Enco X True Wireless Noise Cancelling earphones, that was launched on the 18th of January, along with the OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G.

A pair of black OPPO Enco X earpods placed against each other

The earphones promise a blend of a custom acoustic design and advanced software. Co-created along with the leading Danish HiFi brand, Dynaudio, these earphones boast the perfect blend of OPPO’s seasoned expertise with acoustics and the unparalleled excellence of the European audio giant, Dynaudio. Founded in 1977 by Ejvind Skaaning and Gerhard Richter, Dynaudio is known for building speakers using only their own drivers.

Led by CEO Wilfried Ehrenholz, the company is headquartered in Skanderborg, Denmark. It would hardly be an overstatement to say that the OPPO Enco X is the result of the years of relentless research, testing, and tuning. OPPO’s in-house acoustics team worked with Dynaudio’s award-winning acoustic experts for these painstaking processes in Europe’s largest acoustic laboratory.

What makes the OPPO Enco X earphones stand apart

The unmatched experience of these earphones is further enhanced by the Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling feature. The earphones sporting a dual microphone design come with multiple modes, allowing users to customize and choose the noise reduction level.

There are four different settings to cater to different listening needs on a daily basis: Max Noise Cancellation, Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, and Noise Cancellation Off. Thanks to these settings, users can totally shut off the world around, be it indoors or outdoors, and only focus on what they are listening to. Each mode allows ample freedom to the user to adapt to different scenarios and still enjoy a crystal-clear audio experience!

Two biggies joining hands to create this exemplary product

Equipped with OPPO’s DBEE 3.0 Sound System and LHDC (Low Latency and High-Definition audio codec) wireless transmission, these earphones ensure distinct and detailed levels of sound anytime, anywhere. Way back in 2007, OPPO had developed the DBEE 1.0 dynamic enhancement engine for its MP3 products. Now in 2021, we get OPPO’s yet another innovation, the all-new DBEE 3.0 Acoustic System, accompanied by coaxial dual-driver usually limited to high-end audio equipment.

Dynaudio was always a market leader when it came to manufacturing handcrafted high-end loudspeakers, be it for your home, studio, or car. No wonder when two such towering entities collaborate, what you get is exceptional quality and design!

A must-buy for music-lovers

Flaunting a classic design, comfortable ergonomics and easy fit, the OPPO Enco X is also equipped with a dual-driver. This, in turn, is paired with parallel dual speakers supported by LHDC low-latency wireless transmission. For the uninitiated, LHDC is a coding technology that transmits high-resolution audio wirelessly. It has the ability to generate a stronger audio density and well-rounded audio with natural depth. What’s more, you can also expect a seamless audio transmission along with impeccable speed and data volume.

Why buying high-end earphones is worth it!

Contrary to popular opinion (that says, earphones anyway get damaged easily, so why invest in them?), if you shell out good money, you can get hold of really high-performing earphones. Yes, they are a disposable commodity but come to think of it, they are the most essential part of your audio consumption, be it with your computer or your phone. Premium earphones not only guarantee excellent build quality, but also offer comfortable materials, minimal annoyances, and attractive design features. Buying a durable set of earphones means you will have to spend less money in the long run since there’s no need to replace a damaged set every few months.

Previously, OPPO had tasted immense success with its earphones line-up comprising Enco Free, Enco W51, and Enco W11, and now with the Enco X, OPPO is all set to take the earphones market by storm! Music enthusiasts must give it a try without a second thought! You can pre-order the product here: https://www.flipkart.com/oppo-enco-x-store
